Where do the times and material prices come from?

The times are Bidmio estimates for a smaller private job, including setting up, cutting and clearing up. Materials are the amount per m² times shop prices at Wickes, B&Q and Screwfix ex. VAT, less a 20% trade discount (trade accounts typically give 10–20% plus volume discounts). Change the hourly rate here, and the times and prices in Bidmio to suit your business.

Do replacement windows and doors need Building Regulations approval?

Yes. In England and Wales replacing windows and doors is covered by the Building Regulations. If you are registered with a competent person scheme such as FENSA or CERTASS you self-certify the work and the customer gets a certificate; otherwise the work needs a building control application before it starts. The tool prices fitting only – the made-to-measure unit comes from the customer or the supplier.

How much loft insulation, and what VAT?

The Energy Saving Trust recommends at least 270 mm in total, with the eaves ventilation kept clear. Installing insulation in a home in Great Britain is zero-rated until 31 March 2027 and reduced-rated (5%) from 1 April 2027 (VAT Notice 708/6). The tool applies one VAT rate to the whole quote, so quote loft insulation separately at 0% if you are VAT-registered.

Can the customer get tax relief on the work?

No. There is no general income tax relief for home improvement work in the UK, as there is in Germany or Denmark. The zero rate of VAT on installing insulation in homes is the main saving for this kind of work.

    Is decorating the plasterboard included?

No. The carpenter or dryliner fits the walls and ceilings; taping and jointing or skimming is the plasterer's job and decorating the decorator's. A decorator can price the painting in Bidmio's free tool for painters and decorators.

What does it cost, and is the customer's data stored?

The calculation is free. The quote and the customer's details are only used while Bidmio makes the PDF and are not stored unless you choose to save the quote to an account. Until then everything stays in your browser.
